May 4 @ 9:30 am - 12:30 pm$45 – $60
Frustrated by the amount of single-use, post-consumer plastic bags and packaging that stream through your life? Now you can turn it into art. This class will give you the basics of PLART, plastic art. You will learn how to fuse layers of plastic together to transform everyday recycling into something beautiful. There will be demonstrations where you will learn the best plastic bags and packaging to use, and which to stay away from. You will learn to make the basic material from which all PLART is created.
Mary O’Neill invented PLART after getting tired of hauling plastic to recycling. She is a former creative advertising writer and voice-over artist who wrote, produced and appeared in dozens of radio and television ads. O’Neill has also dabbled in the fine arts over the years, trying her hand at painting, charcoal, pencil and pottery through classes at Cranbrook Academy of Art and the Birmingham Bloomfield Art Center.
Saturday, May 4, Time: 9:30am – 12:30pm
No materials charge, however, students who wish to make their own basic PLART piece need to bring the following:
An everyday iron
A paperback book
A roll of parchment paper
As much plastic as they can gather (the more, the better!) Examples: bags newspapers are delivered in; grocery bags; shopping bags; vegetable bags; diaper packaging; bubble wrap; etc. Start hoarding it now. Make Art! Not Landfills
