Mokuhanga: Japanese Watercolor Woodblock
August 15 @ 9:00 am - 5:00 pm
An event every day that begins at 9:00 am, repeating until August 16, 2019
August 14–16: Mokuhanga is water based and non-toxic. In this 3 day workshop, participants will create beautiful refined prints from their initial design and by carving and printing their work. It is done entirely by hand without a printing press. Each participant will print a small edition of multicolored prints. At the end of the workshop, a print exchange will offer each student the opportunity to go home with a print from each of their classmates. Simple supplies and tools are used: watercolor pigment, wood blocks, Japanese carving tools, rice paste and Japanese paper. All tools and materials are provided but bring sketches or photos that inspire you. Printmaking experience is not required.
Linda J. Beeman is a multi-award-winning artist, instructor and curator who works exclusively in the ancient art of Mokuhanga – Japanese woodblock printmaking. She attended the University of Kansas and continued at Dundas Valley School of Art in Ontario, Canada where she studied printmaking. She was recognized by the Cultural Ministry of Japan and invited to be an Artist in Residence at Mt. Fuji in 2012. She has exhibited widely in the U.S., Great Britain and Japan. Her work can be found in numerous corporate and private collections.
Mokuhanga artists in the world (outside of Japan) and one of about 10 instructors in the United States. Because of the rarity of Mokuhanga instruction outside of Japan, Linda is sought after for workshops at universities, art schools, and privately, across the country.
Linda has traveled extensively in Japan and is the immediate Past President of the Michigan/Shiga Sister State Board. She is also the founder and director of Art from the Lakes, an artist exchange program between the Sister States of Shiga, Japan and Michigan.
