Lecture: German Expressionism (Lecture & Luncheon)

October 23 @ 10:30 am - 1:30 pm

$42 – $50
Emil Nolde, The Prophet, woodcut, 1912, Museum of Modern Art, NY

The Glen Arbor Arts Center presents an art history talk about German Expressionism and an Alsace-Lorraine themed luncheon. Art educator Linda Young leads a lively discussion of this historic period and the visual artists who populated it.

Young, a Glen Arbor resident, was the Director of Museum Education at the Kalamazoo Institute of Arts for 20 years. Her talk will focus on the group of German artists from 1905 – 1930 who felt art should express the artists’ feeling rather than images of the real world.  Artist such as Kathe Kollwitz, Ernst Kirschner, and Emil Nolde used distorted images, exaggerated forms, and color for emotional impact while exploring themes of social protest, societal ills and government corruption in the years before and after World War I. The work of the German Expressionists would be deemed “degenerate” with the rise of Nazism and much was destroyed, sold to finance Hitler’s war machine, or lost during World War II.  What remains is a powerful testament to the strength and endurance of the artistic spirit.

Admission for the lecture-luncheon is $42 GAAC members, $50 nonmembers. Registration begins Thursday, September 12 and ends Wednesday, October 16. Registration is on-line only.

An Alsace-Lorraine themed luncheon follows the lecture with a set menu at LaBecasse restaurant, 9001 S. Dunns Farm Road, Burdickville. The luncheon menu selections will be made at the time of registration. Menu includes choice of coffee or iced tea. Wine may be purchased at the restaurant. Chef’s choice vegetarian or gluten free alternative entree available upon request during registration. First course: Cup of potato leek soup, served with a basket of gougères and Munster puff pastries.
