Northwinds Trio

Northwinds Trio is a reed trio comprised of oboe, clarinet and bassoon. This combination of instruments offers a rich, yet homogeneous sound. The members of the ensemble, Gretchen, Morse, Stephanie Wernli and Melissa Kritzer bring a wealth of experience and training to music they perform.

Stephanie Wernli
Stephanie lives in East Lansing, MI. In 2006 she completed a three year fellowship with the New World Symphony under the direction of Michael Tilson Thomas.   Since moving to Michigan she has become an active free-lance musician.   She has performed with the Grand Rapids, Ann Arbor, Lansing, Kalamazoo, West Shore, Flint, Saginaw Bay, and Adrian Symphonies.  

Stephanie has a Masters of Music from DePaul University, where she studied with Larry Combs. Her Bachelor of Music was received from Eastman School of Music, where she studied with Kenneth Grant.

Melissa Kritzer
Melissa holds degrees from Northwesten University and Cincinnati Colllege-Conservatory of Music.   She will begin a Doctor of Musical Arts at Michigan State University in the fall. Melissa has extensive orchestral experience, including performances with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, The New World Symphony, The National Repertory Orchestra, The Spoleto Festival Orchestra, and positions with the Chicago Civic Orchestra, the Ann Arbor Symphony and the Lansing Symphony. Originally from State College, Pennsylvania, Melissa currently lives in Ann Arbor with her husband, her cat, "Kitty" and her parakeet, "Papageno."

Gretchen Morse
Gretchen received her Doctorate in Oboe Performance from Michigan State University in 1994.   She plays Oboe and English Horn in the Lansing Symphony and has performed with many other orchestras throughout Michigan and the United States.   She has taught at several colleges in Michigan, as well.   An avid composer, Dr. Morse has undertaken numerous commissioned works, and her music has been performed throughout the world.
