CONCERT
Get
an early 4th of July celebration start and enjoy one
of Leelanau County's most popular groups, The Northport
Community Band. This is a FREE Concert brought
to you by the Glen Arbor Art Association and hosted
by the Glen Arbor Athletic Club.
The
Northport Community Band has existed for many years,
but its history is undocumented. Originally it
served primarily as a band that performed at the Independence
Day celebrations at Marina Park. In 2002 the
Northport School instrumental program was tragically
dissolved due to financial concerns. Consequently,
there was no longer a school band to support ceremonial
functions in the Village, such as Memorial Day services
and high school graduations. As a result the
Northport Community Band assumed an expanded role and
schedule. This schedule has included several
ceremonial duties as well as playing formal concerts
and for celebratory activities in the area.
The
popularity of the Northport Community Band has increased
to the point that in 2006, the NCB presented sixteen
separate performance in the Northport and the surrounding
area. The realization of the Northport Community
Arts Center has also been a boon to the NCB where they
have performed to capacity houses at Christmas Concerts,
Sousa Band concerts, and Dinner/Benefits with the Village
Voices.
The
NCB is conducted by Kenneth G. Bloomquist, former Director
of Bands and Director of the School of Music at Michigan
State University. The band members and the conductor
are all volunteers whose work is obviously a “labor
of love.”
The
concert in Glen Arbor on July 1 st will feature lots
of John Philip Sousa and Karl L. King marches, a classical
selection for two, as well as popular music from musical
theatre. Soloists and the NCB Trumpet Trio will
thrill you as well. You can expect a fast paced
variety of music in a beautiful outdoor setting.
