Dunes Review Summer Edition

A Letter from Dunes Review Editor Duncan Sprattmoran:
During the April blizzard I looked out at the birdfeeder hanging
in the maple tree and saw a dozen goldfinches perched in the
snow. For two weeks they gathered near the feeder and I watched
as they transformed from their dusty winter grays through
shades of muted metals to a brilliant gold. Tonight, a long
early May evening, they flit from tree to tree reiterating
the imperative to create.
We all know there is a great storm coming—or perhaps
simply the accretion of many small extinctions and disasters.
We know the environment in which we live is buffeted by winds
that rise far from this verdant peninsular shore. We know
the news, but what we don’t yet know is how we can change
to face the changes we only now begin to foresee. And today
we all know the imperative to change our fundamental relationships
to the environment.
By examining the multiple ecologies which we inhabit—the
natural environment, our families, the constructs of ideologies
we use to give our lives meaning—we may discern the
mysteries and mechanisms upon which we depend. Martin Luther
King, Jr., speaking of other matters, wrote, “I am cognizant
of the interrelatedness of all communities.” Looking
at our relationship to our beloved, our child, our work, or
our world, we may glimpse the possibilities of transformation.
This issue of the Dunes Review is dedicated to Charly Hansen,
painter, printer, cook, bon vivant, father, husband, mentor,
a man who created, and by creating brought insight and possibility
to our community.

Dunes Review Summer Edition
Forsythia, yellow
lilies, a concrete fish, a storm's tidal surge, the echoes
of more than one war, blue stones, Bali, and solitude - these
are just a few of the images lending shape to what promises
to be a strong summer edition of the Dunes Review.
In keeping with
our tradition of publishing established writers alongside
developing
writers, we're proud
to present the work of one of America's most prominent writers,
Philip Caputo. The introductory chapter of Caputo's
new novel, Acts of Faith, will be included in our summer issue
thanks to GAAA member, Peter Phinny who suggested it.
Caputo joins other
favorite and regional writers like fisherman-poet Mike Delp,
Northport muse, Al Bona, and Todd Mercer, who has written
a lively fictional accompaniment to the Cherry Festival.
Our crossover theme
between disciplines sees local writer, teacher and painter,
Duncan Sprattmoran contributing two poems and the cover artwork.
Also, songstress Claudia Schmidt offers some written words
on the friction between artistry and the bottom line.
The Anne-Marie Oomen
Prize for High School Poetry, the Dunes Review Spring
Contest, came to a happy conclusion in April with a record
breaking number of entries from all over the region.
An awards ceremony for the winners, as well as a general reading
of the Dunes Review will be held Wednesday, June
29, 7:30 at GAAA. The summer Dunes Review will
be available at local stores and GAAA.
